Sept 11 - Bella
Oct 8 - Babette's Feast
A NOTE FROM CLARA - Aug 25, 2009
Hi, Everyone!
Just a quick update on what's been going on with WOTR. Sorry I haven't been keeping these updates more frequent, but thanks for understanding.
1) We would like to offer all women of the parish a chance to help grow this program. I talked to David, and he is able to attend a meeting after the 1st Monday rosary and Benediction on October 5, at 7pm. We will meet in the church basement after the Benediction is over. I will send an email in to announce this.
2) I asked for invitation time from the pulpit, in September, to invite women to this meeting, and also to invite them to the retreat. Sandy knew that the weekend of September 19/20 was NOT available, she will let me know if the Sunday before or after is available. We will talk about this at our next planning meeting, so we know who can attend each Mass to extend this invitation. We will also have a display up starting the second weekend of September, to advertise for the retreat. Please try to spend time at the display after your Mass, so we can invite women to participate with us.
3) The bank account is open, if you are planning to attend the retreat, please try to pay MaryEllen as soon as you know you can attend. This will help as we move toward time to pay expenses for the retreat. For those of you we haven't seen, we did receive permission to open a bank account for WOTR, and part of the purpose of the meeting in October is to set up bylaws/guidelines etc. on how to manage the account. We want the money for our own operating expenses, as well as to serve needs in our community.
4) The retreat is currently open for registration for members of St. Peter's parish. We will extend an invitation to other parishes at the end of September, so any spaces not paid for at that time will be made available to others. Registration is $50 for the day, we will offer a limited number of scholarships. If you know of someone who would like to attend but cannot find the money in their budget, please invite them to apply for the scholarship. We will also arrange carpooling, both for those who are day tripping, and those who are spending the night. Reminder: we want to have door prizes at the retreat and are asking each of you to bring a $10 gift to use for this.
5) Movie night is on September 11. Potluck theme is Summer Picnic, we will have supper at 6pm in the church basement, followed by the movie Bella. This movie was chosen as a celebration of life, on the anniversary of the attacks on the twin towers in NYC 8 years ago. We will follow the movie by dessert and adoration. The October movie night is October 8, we have talked a lot about the movie, Babette's Feast. This is a foreign language film with subtitles, and has a strong Eucharistic theme. Potluck theme for that event is harvest feast. We also talked about having the February movie night in conjunction with a date night, yet to be discussed with David, and May as a mother/daughter date night. All other suggestions for movies, themes, and incorporated activities are welcome!
6) The first night of parish rosary and Benediction went very well, some members of our group worked very hard toward this end! Thank you, ladies, you know who you were! There were at least 50 people in attendance, and the altar was beautiful. We will be taking donations for the expense of the flowers at the door, and will also be assigning volunteers to help with saying the rosary. This is a work in progress, please be watchful for ways to help this event grow and become more beautiful, and bring/send your suggestions.
7) Quilting prep for retreat: Mary Ellen and I talked about starting to get the fabrics ready for the quilts. I was able to get space at the church on August 31, probably in the parish office basement. If you have any fabric to donate, please bring it then. Please don't purchase fabrics to donate, it seems that those of us who sew think we have enough fabric to donate and help lighten the load in our closets at home! :) If you would like to join us that evening, just show up. If you have a cutting board, rotary cutter, cutting ruler, or iron, please bring it along. We will just get our fabric organized and start cutting the squares and strips needed to make the quilts during the retreat. If we can cut the squares ahead of time, we will be able to have the retreat participants go straight to sewing, and be more likely to get the tops completed on that day.
8) For those of you in the Monday night group, we will start in our book again on September 14, if that is all right. I think we are on chapter 5.
Well...that is a lot of news, I hope you are all doing well, had a great summer, and are looking forward to this start of a new year!
Clara
